Phoenix College Receives $25,000 Grant from BHHS Legacy Foundation to Fight Student Food Insecurity

Phoenix, AZ — [November 7, 2025] — Phoenix College (PC) is proud to announce that it has received a $25,000 grant from BHHS Legacy Foundation to support the Bumstead Resource Room, a campus initiative dedicated to combating food insecurity among college students.

The award was made in honor of BHHS Legacy Foundation’s 25th Anniversary, commemorating its long-standing commitment to improving the health and quality of life for Arizonans.

Located in the Phoenix College Student Union, the Bumstead Resource Room provides students with access to wholesome, non-perishable food items and “Grab ’n Go” lunches. Students may shop discreetly or submit online requests for pre-packed food bags, ensuring both dignity and convenience.

“No student should have to choose between pursuing an education and having enough to eat,” said Dr. Kimberly Britt, President of Phoenix College. “This generous grant from the BHHS Legacy Foundation will allow us to meet the growing demand for nutritious food on our campus and ensure our students can learn, focus, and succeed.”

The need is urgent: 66% of Phoenix College students experience food or housing insecurity, and the Bumstead Resource Room has logged more than 10,000 student visits in its first four years. This represents a 47% increase in usage as more students turn to the Resource Room for help in meeting basic needs.

The $25,000 grant will enable Phoenix College to purchase and restock high-demand food items not always available through its community food bank partners.

“Food insecurity is a real obstacle to student health and academic success,” said Gerald L. Wissink, CEO of BHHS Legacy Foundation. “We’re proud to partner with Phoenix College in ensuring that students have access to healthy food and the opportunity to thrive—both in school and in life.”

“Food insecurity is a growing issue among community college students,” said Aristotle Mosier, PC Director of Student Life in Leadership, who reiterated the need for this vital resource. “In a recent 2023 Hope Center survey of Maricopa Community College students, 46% reported experiencing food insecurity. The $25,000 gift from the BHHS Legacy Foundation is a tremendous contribution that directly supports students who rely on the Bumstead Resource Room for food and essential assistance. We are deeply grateful for this generous donation and its lasting impact on our students’ well-being and success.” One student added, “Thank you for providing this resource. I was able to eat a full meal regularly because of it.”

Phoenix College and BHHS Legacy Foundation share a vision of equity, wellness, and opportunity for all students. Together, they are helping ensure that no one at Phoenix College has to learn on an empty stomach.
